Introducing the new Google Home

Pin your favourite devices to your home view and use Spaces to see multiple camera live streams right when you open the app. If you like the idea of a smart speaker but also want Bluetooth so that you can bring the speaker with you when you go outside then you should check out the Sonos Move. While it’s still on the pricey side you get Bluetooth functionality as well as the entire Sonos ecosystem behind to build upon. When it comes to setting up a home audio system, it usually requires some confusion and a bunch of cables. That’s been slowly getting better , but that’s not an issue at all with the Google Home Max.

Designed to appeal to audiophiles, the Home Max pack dual 4.5-inch high-excursion woofers and two custom 0.7-inch tweeters and is 20 times more powerful than the original Home, according to the search giant. Google is finally bringing the largest and most powerful member of the Home smart speaker family, the Google Home Max, to the U.K… for a whopping 399 pounds. The Home Max can also play in multi-room audio groups with other Google Home or Chromecast devices, which makes filling your whole house with the same music easy.

Behind the fabric are four lights that only show up when you’re adjusting something on the speaker. They’ll turn off a second after you change the volume or after it’s done listening to what you said. Around back you’ll get the power supply input, a 3.5mm input, and a physical mute switch. The mute switch doesn’t stop music playback, it just turns off the microphone so it isn’t always listening for the hotword.

You can also assume, of course, that Google's own speakers will get new features first (that's what has happened with Alexa speakers). Unless the Link is compellingly better, audio-wise, the Max is a safer bet. Overall, the Google Home Max is one of the best smart speakers that you can buy if you're looking for quality audio. It faces tough competition from Sonos's lineup, but offers a quality audio experience nonetheless. However, the Home Max won't be worth your money if you're not fussy about sound experiences.

The Google Nest Hub Max is a great smart display

We found these controls to be exceptionally responsive, but, of course, you can also just talk to the Home Max. You can say, "set volume," from one to ten, or use percentages. It requires the Google Home app and having your phone connected to a local Wi-Fi network.

Speech recognition sensitivity is still brilliant. The Google Nest Hub Max can understand you when you talk at a normal speaking volume even when competing with music that seems just as loud, or perhaps even louder. When working as a Nest camera, the Google Nest Hub Max captures clips whenever it senses movement or unusual noise. And you can link your phone so Nest knows when you are at home or out, and act accordingly.

You’ll also find an aux audio-in port and support for Bluetooth 4 and Google Cast, meaning you can connect it to your existing hi-fi system and smart speaker network. There’s also a microphone tucked away in amongst all of that for far-field voice recognition. The Google Home Max is, apparently, 20-times louder than Google Home. I’m not sure about you, but when Google Home is on max volume, it’s plenty loud enough for me.

And because you can orient the speaker vertically or horizontally that touch-sensitive bit can either be on top or on the right side. One helpful feature is that a voice will tell you when you’ve accidentally turned the speaker turned upside-down if you’re moving it. Once you’ve got it connected to your router then all that you need to do to connect to it is press the cast icon that pops up in the app you’re using. Most of the major streaming services, be it YouTube Music, YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, etc., have built-in functionality that will cause the button to pop up automatically in the app.

Google Home Max is finally coming to the UK, but should you buy it?

There probably aren't many occasions when you'll need to hit peak volume, but if you do, the option is always there to disturb the neighbours. The slight emphasis in the lower frequencies will probably be a positive for most people because of its subtlety. It doesn’t overpower the mids at all and when paired with how loud this thing can get, so it’s perfect for powering your parties. That said, it sounded good even at low volumes and I ended up using it to play music in the background throughout the day as well. I tested this by playing the song Havana by Camilla Cabelo at four different volumes .

On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," it delivers powerful low frequency response. Thus, at more moderate levels, you get a rounder, fuller sense of bass depth. In fact, for a speaker this size—not tiny, but not massive—you get a disproportionately full bass response.

It also adjusts sound settings depending on what song you’re listening too, so it should always be playing sound at its absolute best. It’s unclear just how this will impact sound quality – what with Home Max shifting the balance on the fly – but as this is a device made for audiophiles, it’s likely Google has tried hard to limit distortion. Along the back panel, there's a mic switch—this turns the mic for Google Assistant and the speakerphone on and off. The speaker utilizes an array of six far-field mics to pick up your voice commands from a distance. In terms of connectivity, Google Home Max will be Cast-enabled.

Unfortunately, Google is making this a US-exclusive for now. The price-tag is softened somewhat by 12-month of free access to YouTube Red, meaning your ad-free streaming subscription is covered for the year. So, even during booming audio, Google reckons the Home Max will be able to hear your voice requests. 26 Early Black Friday 2022 Deals You Can Get TodayAll the worthwhile early offers on TVs, phones, streaming sticks, vacuum cleaners, and more.

Setup this side of the Google Nest Hub Max by downloading the Nest app on your phone and its 6.5-megapixel camera can act like a smart home camera. The Google Nest Cam, a dinky little home camera, cost £159 / $199 on its own, making this box seem an even better deal. Setup is very similar to that of any Google Assistant speaker.

And, to state the more or less obvious, it blows away the audio performance offered by the smaller Google Home speaker, though that speaker offers some decent bass depth for its size. If Google Assistant is a priority and solid audio performance is also high on the list, you won't be disappointed with the Home Max. When sub-bass moments occasionally occur in the mix, the speakers deliver them with full-bodied presence that doesn't compete with the highs for the spotlight. Again, the louder you pump the volume, the thinner the bass gets, but at fairly high listening levels, the bass depth is still impressive. The vocals are delivered with solid clarity and without much added sibilance. Bill Callahan's "Drover," a track with less deep bass in the mix, gives us a better sense of the Home Max's overall sound signature.
