15 Modern Ranch Style Homes with Massive Curb Appeal

A buttery yellow will look much more charming on a ranch house than on a towering, two-story colonial home. Typically one-story homes with open, casual layouts, ranch style homes are marked by low-pitched roofs and extended eaves. They became popular in the 1960s and can include asymmetrical rectangular, L-shaped, or U-shaped designs. An excellent way to enhance the simplicity of your ranch home and inject some character into its facade is to use brown stained wood siding. If your ranch house is already built with wood, then you may want to just paint the surface brown just like the picture here.

White Dove is one of the most popular whites among designers for interiors and exteriors because, compared to genuine white, it is a soft, warm white with a trace of gray. If your home receives a lot of shade or if you like a crisp, white appearance, use White Dove. You can even choose foliage that will complement the color of your house. Red roses look great against a white exterior, and blossoming cherry trees are magical next to a house dressed in Navy blue. If your home consists of exposed brick or stone, that’s a great place to start when selecting a new paint. Green is a great paint option if you already have a brown or gray roof.

Manufactured Wood (Types, Uses & Comparison)

This design enables tiny house owners to have a more expansive porch, regardless of their limited space property. If you plan to use your garage more often for DIY projects, a white garage door will match the wall’s pastel color. The light shade of your house exterior gives off a clean and unique vibe to lighten your everyday mood. If the color of your roof is a warm brown or gray, it probably won’t look great with a cool-toned paint job. If changing it isn’t an option, try to choose a color that will look good with your roof.

Use copper roofing on a porch or the section of roof over a bay window. Install high-end light fixtures over your entryway and light the path to your front door. Self-taught California architect Clifford May pioneered the ranch home architectural style.

Luxury Ranch Home Ideas

The Landgrave Frederick II (1720–1785) ruled Hesse-Kassel as a benevolent despot, from 1760 to 1785. He combined Enlightenment ideas with Christian values, cameralist plans for central control of the economy, and a militaristic approach toward diplomacy. These soldiers, commonly known as Hessians, fought under the British flag. The British used the Hessians in several conflicts, including in the Irish Rebellion of 1798. For further revenue, the soldiers were loaned to other places as well.

Integrating additional features, like stonework or large windows for natural light, can boost the home’s character and lean into the outdoor aesthetic. When selecting stones, be sure to include color tones that mesh well with the color of the siding. For an unconventional ranch log home floor plan, consider bridging the main space with the garage via a connector. Not only is this a practical design that allows easy access to vehicles, it also adds a unique feel to the home’s exterior look. Slightly angling the home and garage toward each other can boost privacy by shaping a small enclave in the yard. If you want to add a bit of contrast to your home, try using colors with white trims.

Desirable Ranch House Color Ideas

With virtually no front yard, the homeowners installed a rock-bordered flower bed with a few sculptural-like plants for visual interest. Bright white trim with gray insets as well as the pattern on the garage helps the windows and doors to pop. This beach-y midcentury modern ranch home is bright and airy with a fresh coat of paint, modern finishes, and wood accents.

Wood elements, including the front door and horizontal slat siding, add warmth and texture to the white brick facade. Large windows surrounding the double doors create an open, airy atmosphere. When decorating your ranch home interior, keep to your overall design style. A long, low sofa fits well into a midcentury ranch home, alongside other pieces from that era. If you have a farmhouse ranch, go for a neutral color palette with wood and metal accents. A rustic cabin with a ranch footprint can carry stained wood paneling and a large stone fireplace.

Simple Front Landscaping

This relatively open floor plan includes large windows and glass doors, for easy outdoor access and cross ventilation. May’s first ranch home plan was his own residence, and he designed it to blend in with California’s landscape. Visit our ranch home remodel guide for more tips and ideas on how to modernize the exterior and interior design of your ranch style home.

Small houses, vacation homes, and tiny public establishments often opt for these ranch-style house colors to make the house look appealing yet easy to design. If you favor a brighter exterior paint color for your ranch house, then how about a subtle shade of yellow. This is also a warm color just like brown, but with added visual interest.

The single-tone colors will stand out without being overbearing as long as there is some distinction between the body color and trim accents. As long as there’s some delineation between body color and trim details, these single tone colors will make a statement and stand out without being too loud. Signature colors like bright yellow and red tend to draw a smaller crowd. Different colors will take different amounts of effort to keep up.

Add a bit of personality to your ranch home by using Cape Cod smoky blues. Dark blue is a unique color that can help to make your home stand out from the rest. When you have any windows with cracked or missing putty, then repair them. Remove any old, cracked, or peeling paint from around the windows as well. If your home is particularly dirty or has a lot of built-up grime, you may want to consider renting or purchasing a pressure washer.

Step 7: Prime Bare Wood

The official anthem of Hesse is called "Hessenlied" ("Song of Hesse") and was written by Albrecht Brede and Carl Preser . Pressure washing will remove any dirt, grime, or debris from your home’s exterior, making painting much easier. A landscape on a ranch-style home can have different levels of privacy, particularly if more private rooms, such as bedrooms, face the street.

This modern, symmetrical suburban ranch got an upgrade in vertical painted siding with whitewashed stone. The centered porch and contrasting colors draw the eye to the beautiful door and large picture windows. We love a good midcentury modern ranch style home with its large windows and simple, open design. We chose Dragon’s Breath by Benjamin Moore for the roof bump out on this home and garage to contrast with the brick painted in Revere Pewter.

Yellow blends in nicely with any surroundings and as you can see in this photo, it emits a warm and inviting feel. This ranch home boasts a mix of gray stone siding with light blue exterior, accentuated with dark gray shutters and roof. The use of white trim has brightened up the exterior and drawn the eye upwards. An exuberant mix of greens and burgundy adds energy to this contemporary ranch-style home.

Naturally, we also love the seating nook that helps blend indoors and outdoors — as a true ranch should. To add interest to a big, dull ranch, you could also paint part of the bricks a contrasting color while leaving certain bricks alone. This ranch-style design is also suitable for houses with gable and valley roofs since it makes the home look larger and more noticeable. For homeowners who like to have a long pathway and an English-style front garden, choose any earth tone colors as a finishing touch. Adding a white or light trim to a dark gray house creates a sharp contrast that is pleasing to the eye. Plus, the dark walls are a great background for colorful foliage.

Nest Smart Speakers & Home Audio Systems

The Home Max works with key music streaming services, including Spotify, Deezer, Google Play Music and YouTube music – and you can connect sources via Bluetooth or a 3.5mm auxiliary input. Other Chromecast devices are also compatible for stereo pairing and multi-room functionality. The speaker's 4.5-inch woofers provide deep, balanced bass and high-fidelity sound, adds the company.

The Home Max tech is headlined by two 4.5-inch woofers. Underneath a fabric speaker grille, Google has also packed in 0.7-inch tweeters, an acoustic brace and a range of far-field microphones. Google's high-end speaker with built-in voice assistant, designed to compete with Sonos and Bang & Olufsen, is finally coming to the UK. The Google Home Max – a wireless, sleek, device – was first announced all the way back in October last year and has already launched in the US, Canada and Australia. Most Nest smart displays and Wi-Fi devices have a Thread border router built in, so you won’t need a separate hub for adding Thread devices to your smart home. Thread is the latest wireless mesh technology, designed to make your smart devices more connected and reliable.

Hey Google!

Most domestic lightbulbs have a very warm white hue, so the screen tilts towards a warmer, yellowy tone. You can turn this feature off if you find the look too soft. YouTube and Google Play video content are the two top sources. Again, though, YouTube navigation on the Google Nest Hub Max’s touchscreen has been deliberately limited to stop it from seeming like a tablet that you happen to be able to talk to. You can’t rifle through categories as you might do on a tablet, phone or smart TV interface.

A few taps through the app to select the speaker and it is done. The process takes less than five minutes and should be the benchmark that the setup of all smart home products are held against. But what about those of us who live in smaller apartments? Lock the front door, arm the security system and turn on your cameras at the same time each night – automatically. Set the speaker to play your favourite party music on Friday evenings.4 Have your TV turn on when the living room lights go dark for movie night. You can also assume, of course, that Google's own speakers will get new features first (that's what has happened with Alexa speakers). Unless the Link is compellingly better, audio-wise, the Max is a safer bet. Overall, the Google Home Max is one of the best smart speakers that you can buy if you're looking for quality audio. It faces tough competition from Sonos's lineup, but offers a quality audio experience nonetheless. However, the Home Max won't be worth your money if you're not fussy about sound experiences.

Along the back panel, there's a mic switch—this turns the mic for Google Assistant and the speakerphone on and off. The speaker utilizes an array of six far-field mics to pick up your voice commands from a distance. In terms of connectivity, Google Home Max will be Cast-enabled.

The Max is capable of producing deep and clear music playback from Spotify, Google Play and other streaming services. A 3.5mm audio jack on the back of the Max also allows for external inputs.

Designed to appeal to audiophiles, the Home Max pack dual 4.5-inch high-excursion woofers and two custom 0.7-inch tweeters and is 20 times more powerful than the original Home, according to the search giant. Google is finally bringing the largest and most powerful member of the Home smart speaker family, the Google Home Max, to the U.K… for a whopping 399 pounds. The Home Max can also play in multi-room audio groups with other Google Home or Chromecast devices, which makes filling your whole house with the same music easy.

The Google Nest Hub Max is a larger version of the Google Home Hub, a smart speaker with a screen – also known as a smart display. Supported audio streaming file formats include HE-AAC, LC-AAC+, MP3, Vorbis, WAV, FLAC, and Opus.

There’s support for YouTube Music, Google Play Music, Spotify, Pandora, TuneIn and iHeart Radio, and it works with all other smart services that Google Home works with. Powering the smart features of the Google Home Max is a quad-core 1.5GHz 64-bit ARM A53 processor. Google has taken to the design department to build the Google Home Max from scratch. From the outside, it’s simply just a Chalk – or Charcoal – speaker measuring 336.6 x 190 x 154.4 mm and 5.3kg in weight. Clearly, this thing is not meant to be super portable, it’s a speaker made for the home.

It also adjusts sound settings depending on what song you’re listening too, so it should always be playing sound at its absolute best. It’s unclear just how this will impact sound quality – what with Home Max shifting the balance on the fly – but as this is a device made for audiophiles, it’s likely Google has tried hard to limit distortion. While it’s still on the pricey side you get Bluetooth functionality as well as the entire Sonos ecosystem behind to build upon. When it comes to setting up a home audio system, it usually requires some confusion and a bunch of cables. That’s been slowly getting better , but that’s not an issue at all with the Google Home Max.

Designed to appeal to audiophiles, the Home Max pack dual 4.5-inch high-excursion woofers and two custom 0.7-inch tweeters and is 20 times more powerful than the original Home, according to the search giant. Behind the fabric are four lights that only show up when you’re adjusting something on the speaker. They’ll turn off a second after you change the volume or after it’s done listening to what you said. Around back you’ll get the power supply input, a 3.5mm input, and a physical mute switch. The mute switch doesn’t stop music playback, it just turns off the microphone so it isn’t always listening for the hotword.

The Google Nest Hub Max is a great smart display

We found these controls to be exceptionally responsive, but, of course, you can also just talk to the Home Max. You can say, "set volume," from one to ten, or use percentages. It requires the Google Home app and having your phone connected to a local Wi-Fi network.

Speech recognition sensitivity is still brilliant. The Google Nest Hub Max can understand you when you talk at a normal speaking volume even when competing with music that seems just as loud, or perhaps even louder. When working as a Nest camera, the Google Nest Hub Max captures clips whenever it senses movement or unusual noise. And you can link your phone so Nest knows when you are at home or out, and act accordingly.

Meet the updated Google Home.

You’ll also find an aux audio-in port and support for Bluetooth 4 and Google Cast, meaning you can connect it to your existing hi-fi system and smart speaker network. There’s also a microphone tucked away in amongst all of that for far-field voice recognition. The Google Home Max is, apparently, 20-times louder than Google Home. I’m not sure about you, but when Google Home is on max volume, it’s plenty loud enough for me.

google home max uk

And because you can orient the speaker vertically or horizontally that touch-sensitive bit can either be on top or on the right side. One helpful feature is that a voice will tell you when you’ve accidentally turned the speaker turned upside-down if you’re moving it. Once you’ve got it connected to your router then all that you need to do to connect to it is press the cast icon that pops up in the app you’re using. Most of the major streaming services, be it YouTube Music, YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, etc., have built-in functionality that will cause the button to pop up automatically in the app.

Google Home Max is finally coming to the UK, but should you buy it?

There probably aren't many occasions when you'll need to hit peak volume, but if you do, the option is always there to disturb the neighbours. The slight emphasis in the lower frequencies will probably be a positive for most people because of its subtlety. It doesn’t overpower the mids at all and when paired with how loud this thing can get, so it’s perfect for powering your parties. That said, it sounded good even at low volumes and I ended up using it to play music in the background throughout the day as well. I tested this by playing the song Havana by Camilla Cabelo at four different volumes .

google home max uk

On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife's "Silent Shout," it delivers powerful low frequency response. Thus, at more moderate levels, you get a rounder, fuller sense of bass depth. In fact, for a speaker this size—not tiny, but not massive—you get a disproportionately full bass response.

Cancel An icon of a circle with a diagonal line across.

Along the back panel, there's a mic switch—this turns the mic for Google Assistant and the speakerphone on and off. The speaker utilizes an array of six far-field mics to pick up your voice commands from a distance. In terms of connectivity, Google Home Max will be Cast-enabled.

Check out our guide to the best wireless multi-room speakers that you can buy. Can you ever overdo Google Home devices, even if your home is very small? The Google Home Max has proved that the answer is now.

Unfortunately, Google is making this a US-exclusive for now. The price-tag is softened somewhat by 12-month of free access to YouTube Red, meaning your ad-free streaming subscription is covered for the year. So, even during booming audio, Google reckons the Home Max will be able to hear your voice requests. 26 Early Black Friday 2022 Deals You Can Get TodayAll the worthwhile early offers on TVs, phones, streaming sticks, vacuum cleaners, and more.

Apple HomePod

Setup this side of the Google Nest Hub Max by downloading the Nest app on your phone and its 6.5-megapixel camera can act like a smart home camera. The Google Nest Cam, a dinky little home camera, cost £159 / $199 on its own, making this box seem an even better deal. Setup is very similar to that of any Google Assistant speaker.

google home max uk

And, to state the more or less obvious, it blows away the audio performance offered by the smaller Google Home speaker, though that speaker offers some decent bass depth for its size. If Google Assistant is a priority and solid audio performance is also high on the list, you won't be disappointed with the Home Max. When sub-bass moments occasionally occur in the mix, the speakers deliver them with full-bodied presence that doesn't compete with the highs for the spotlight. Again, the louder you pump the volume, the thinner the bass gets, but at fairly high listening levels, the bass depth is still impressive. The vocals are delivered with solid clarity and without much added sibilance. Bill Callahan's "Drover," a track with less deep bass in the mix, gives us a better sense of the Home Max's overall sound signature.

I wanted to have enough clothes for each day of the cruise, as well as some options for formal nights and excursions. After careful consideration, I decided to pack 8 outfits, which included a mix of casual and dressier options.
